Case Study: Low Cost 2.4GHz Radio Module

We were presented a short-term, wireless design, opportunity. SCT’s ability to deliver new designs and prototype samples on tight timelines grew this relationship into an 4-year, multi-project partnership.

The ability to ramp projects up and down quickly with external resources provided our customer with the ability to explore new market opportunities without requiring permanent staff. Internal design resources were able to focus on the customer’s core IP. However, as revenues increased, permanent staff was brought on board to replace SCT designers. SCT was able to transition the design back to new employees to minimize business interruption.

Wireless Pedometer

Key Objectives and Results:

  • Design of low-cost, extremely low-power consumption transmitter for low-rate data
  • Significant increases in manufacturing yield over previous solution and elimination of “tuning” requirements during product assembly

Key Objectives and Results:

  • Design of a high-volume, quad-mode, penta-band data card in Express Card form factor
  • Full regulatory and manufacturing support and transition
  • Design was transferred from Asian ODM to SCT

Key Objectives and Results:

  • Design of high-volume radios for datacards operating in the 900, 1800 and 1900MHz bands
  • Full regulatory and manufacturing support
  • Actively involved with manufacturing support during prototype and pilot builds in Mexico
  • Design hand-off occurred at >95% yield

Key Objectives and Results:

  • Re-design of European handset for North American market
  • Close interaction with Asian contract manufacturer
  • First pass yield of > 95% on pilot build of 5000 units
  • 250k units successfully built in first 3 months of production
